Best Work Boots for Men

When you are looking for a pair of work boots, it might take a little researching. The factors you have to consider are the type of weather you will be working in, the type of job you will be doing, and your overall comfort level is.

How weather can impact the boot you chose

What type of weather you will be in is an important question to ask yourself when you are buying work boots. There are work boots that work best for rainy weather. There are some that are great for hot weather or cold weather.

  • What to wear on rainy days? – For rainy weather, you should buy water resistant work boots. They keep your feet dry when you are working in the rain, and you do not have to worry about the water aging your boots. Slip resistant boots also work great for a rainy day. You do not have to worry about falling on wet concrete or floors because they have a rubber compound grip at the bottom of the boots. Most companies make slip resistant waterproof boots. You can get the benefit of both types in one. Most waterproof work boots are leather, because leather resists water damage.
  • What to wear on hot days? – Sweaty overhead feet can make you feel uncomfortable, and you lose focus at work. In most jobs, a loss of concentration can be dangerous. Composite toe work boots are non-metallic and are great for not transferring cold or heat. Work boots made from Nylon mesh and leather are great for warm weather. The material is flexible, lightweight and breathable.
  • What to wear on cold days? – Insulated boots are the best buy for cold weather. The insulation will keep your feet warm so you will not have to worry about your toes falling off.

How your job can affect the type of boots you choose

Construction Workers Boots

The type of job you will be doing is the main consideration you should have when deciding on a work boot. Steel toe boots are essential for people who work as a mechanic, electrician, logger or construction worker.

The steel toe act as a reinforcement. Steel toes are the most compact and heaviest reinforcement toes on the market. If you work with heavy equipment, steel toe work boots are the best option for you. However, they can conduct heat.

Therefore, some people opt for aluminum or composite toes. Aluminum toes are lighter than steel toe, but they do not protect as well. Composite toes are bulky, but they work great and do not conduct heat.

  • Construction Workers – Steel midsoles are essential for construction workers and mechanics. They protect anything from reaching your feet. If you step on a nail, the midsole stops it from penetrating through to your foot.
  • Electricians – Those in the electrician trade should look for boots that are electrical hazard boots. These work boots are able your feet from up to 600 volts of electrical charges.
  • Policemen – Police Officers need work books that are comfortable and durable. The best work boot is one with an AP midsole. They are lighter and softer than a steel midsole, and they do not retain heat or the cold. The most essential element is a lightweight exoskeleton mesh design that provides support while in motion. Policemen and military people need work boots that allow flexible movement.

Guide to Comfort and Durability

No matter what type of work you do, the two most important features of any pair of work boots are comfort and durability. When you’re looking down the barrel of a 12-hour shift, you’ll learn very quickly how much the comfort of your work boots matters. Without the right boots, you’ll be feeling the pinch after just a few hours, and you won’t be able to work as productively. If you wear the wrong boots day after day, you could even set yourself up for foot injuries.

Durability is key to ensuring that your boots not only last you for a very long time, but also maintain their structural integrity so that your feet stay comfortable and protected. Flimsy work boots will break down over time, allowing the corrosive chemicals, heavy equipment or high pressures in your work environment to injure your feet.

Here are a few of the things you need to look for when considering the potential comfort and durability of a work boot:

Boot Design

Boot design incorporates every component of your work boots, but discussions about design generally focus on the shape and outward appearance of the boot. Design impacts much more than aesthetics. For example, if you were to wear a boot with a pointy toe, you would likely wear down the tip very quickly from accidentally jamming it into pieces of equipment or other hard surfaces. If you wear a boot with a thicker heel, you’ll likely force the whole front of your foot down, creating intense aches and pains that will have you limping after extended wear.

Boots that are designed for comfort an durability typically have a rounded toe, a thick but flat sole, and reinforcements around key areas of the boot, such as the heel and toe. Extra padding should also be available around areas that will rub across your foot, such as the tongue and collar.

Boot Material

The materials that your work boots are made of have the most significant impact on both their durability and their comfort. Strong and durable work boots need to have strong and durable materials, like leather. Yet even the type of leather matters. Some leathers are softer and more pliable, which makes them more comfortable, but others are thicker and stronger, which makes them more durable.

Most work boots are made of full-grain leather, which means that the leather has not been sanded or buffed. It is less treated and contains all of the grain, which makes it stronger and more durable.

Work boots that are made of a softer leather must be reinforced to ensure that they will stand up to a lot of wear and tear over time. Strengthening a shoe made of softer leather is usually accomplished by adding padding or leather strips around areas like the heel and toe.

Whether a pair of work boots feature full-grain leather or a softer leather, they can be comfortable. Look for materials like a cushioned insole, padding around the collar or tongue, and a flexible, rubber sole.

Boot Insoles

The insoles in your work boots play a big role in your comfort when wearing them. You’ll feel the difference that a quality insole makes as soon as you slip on a pair of boots. They’ll feel like tiny pillows under your feet.

Insoles should be both springy and light. They should be thick enough to help absorb the shock of each step, but they should be light enough so that they don’t make your feet too hot and sweaty. Many insoles are made with moisture-wicking material to keep the boot dry. Many work boots also feature removable insoles so you can get a lighter and airier fit as needed.

A quality insole can contribute to the durability of your work boots by providing another layer of protection for the boot, as well. The insole will reduce the amount of wear and tear on the sole of the boot.

There is a boot for every job.  Matching a mens work boot to your job and need is easy.  The hard part is picking a work boot brand that will meet your wants and needs.  Some boot manufacturers may not make work boots that meet your standards.

Quality can vary by models within the brand too.  For example, we once owned a pair of Hi Tec work boots that were excellent and lasted about 3 years of constant wear.  We tried to replace them with a different new style of Hi Tec boots that were so uncomfortable we got rid of them shortly after that.

Because there are so many work boot manufacturers, we are going to name a few popular rated models by some of the companies we think are better.  All these companies consistently make excellent footwear products, suggested by their loyal customer base, reviews, and our own experience with some of the styles.  We feel especially good about Danner boots, Chippewa, Rocky, and Georgia. Carolina, Lacrosse, and Red Wing also make good work boot but will not be covering them here today.  Note though that as with most products, the more you spend the better quality and longevity you get from the boot.

The Danner boot company is well-known for their boot quality and customer following.  One of their most recently talked about alloy toe boots is the Vandal multipurpose work boot.  The safety toe is up to or beyond the ASTM standard F2413-05 I/75 C/75 EH.  This boot comes cushioned and midsole supported for wearing all-day with minimum fatigue in the heel.  The upper is abrasion resistant full grain leather with a GORE-TEX® liner to keep you dry.  The Vibram® outsole withstands oil and slipping.  Reviewers felt this was a true to fit and well-built boot.  It is comfortable to wear and owners recommend them to friends.

Chippewa boots makes a 9-inch Super Logger men’s work boot that is insulated and waterproof.  Model 25408 comes with 400 Thinsulate to keep your feet warm in fall to early winter cold weather.  This particular model does not have a steel toe but other similar Chippewa loggers do.  These boots are very comfortable, made to last and offer superb support to the arch.  Break in is not needed for most wearers and no one ever complains of blisters with these boots.   Many hard hats prefer logger boots for their durability, comfort, support, and long boot life.  Workmen like logger boots because stitching is used rather than glue.  The boots last longer because of this.

Ruggedness defines Rocky work boots.  The Rocky MobiLite Max model 6114 is a favored waterproof and steel toe boot by many men.  They come loaded with an ASTM footbed, electrical hazard protection, oil and slip resistant Mobilite outsole, and a wider toe box than competitor’s boots.  One cool feature is the rigid shank system on these boots that stabilizes like steel but does not add the weight of steel.  Some owners feel this is the best boot Rocky makes because of how durable they are in harsh conditions like slaughterhouses where they get hosed down with scorching water daily.  Another notable plus people have found with this mens work boot is how good their feet feel when they get home after being on them all-day.  The cushioning is outstanding.  There is also a nonsteel toe version of this boot available in model 7114.

The last company on our list is Georgia Boot.  In their Georgia Giant G6274 they offer a lightweight 6″ work boot with over 60 years of experienced boot making behind it.  Georgia uses high quality full-grain leather that is abrasion resistant and electrical hazard safe designed with electrians in mind.  This is a long-lasting boot that you can resole once you wear out the Goodyear welt construction and thick rubber outsoles.  The outsole uses lightweight polyurethane, which relieves much of the stress on its owner’s feet.  No break-in is needed.  They are comfortable from the first day.  Many people rebuy this boot after their old pairs wear out and cannot be resoled again.  That is usually after about 5 years of constant wear.  These boots surpass most safety standards and therefore deliver confidence to factory workers or anyone surrounded by large machinery.

While these four mens work boots are some of the more heavily bought and reviewed, there are many others styles available that will fit your needs perfectly.  We just feel these companies and the three others to offer better quality work boots and that you should look at those first.  Working on your feet all-day is tiring and taking proper care of your feet is critical to safety and longevity in the workforce.

Good work boots are essential to keeping you safe and comfortable while you are on the job. Quality work boots provide a firm grip on your foot and ankle, helping to stabilize you while you work and they should also be made of breathable materials that keep your feet warm and dry, whether you are attempting to fend off heavy sweating or you are working in wet conditions. They must be durable so they can stand up to even the toughest conditions on the job. Of course, they must also be comfortable. When you are on your feet all day, you need boots that are designed for comfort.

If you aren’t sure what are the top work boots to buy, reading some work boot reviews can help you narrow down the field and make your selection. We’ve done a lot of the work for you, compiling some reviews to help you figure out what are the best work boots to meet your needs.
